General Information

Since its inception in 1983, the Institute for University Management and Leadership has had the following main objectives:

• to contribute to the training or professional development for university executives in Latin America and the Caribbean
• to ensure greater relevance and a more important role for universities within their immediate environment
• to contribute to the transformation of the universities into instruments for sustainable development.

The seven IGLU centres (Andean Countries, Brazil, Caribbean, Central America, Colombia, Mexico and Southern Cone), with support from the General Coordination, presently offer the following ACTIVITIES:

• IGLU courses in regional centres and field sessions in Canada, the United States and Latin America
• Seminars and thematic workshops dealing with five major issues: 
  • Strategic University Management
  • Accreditation and Quality Assessment
  • Relationships between universities and their communities
  • Internationalization of Higher Education
  • Re-engineering of universities
• Alumni Chapters
• Electronic publications primarily concerned with the dissemination of case studies and examples of best practices.

Over the next few years, IGLU will concentrate its work on the IGLU 2000 Action Plan, which includes:

• Consolidation of existing activities
• Creation of new seminars dealing with:
  • New Models and Methods of University Training
  • Professionalization of Academic Personnel
  • Governance of Higher Education Institutions
• Opening of an IGLU Consultation Centre
• Development of a new domain of activity, in collaboration with the College of the Americas, aiming at training trainers in sustainable development.
