The goal of the Interamerica Seminars (SIA) is to find venues conducive to academic exchange where young university students from different countries can meet. The objective of SIAs is to instill in students an increased interest in specific topics of continental importance within the framework of an inter-American, interdisciplinary and intercultural perspective. SIAs are conducted in order for students to become familiar with the cultural, social, economic, and political diversity of the Americas.
Since 1998, the College of the Americas has supported 26 Interamerica Seminars, coordinated by 17 universities from the nine IOHE regions. One of the seminars was held by the National Council of Presidents of Costa Rica (CONARE). To date, 1356 students from approximately 100 IOHE member institutions of higher education have taken part in these seminars.
The main subjects of SIAs have recently revolved around the themes of democracy, human rights and cultural diversity, within the framework of a close collaboration with the Organization of American States (OAS). SIAs have also dealt with several other themes, namely the environment and ecotourism, efficient use of energy, continental and regional integration, urban development and road safety, and digital marginalization and integration.
